Integrative psychotherapy - changing lives for the better

The therapeutic process

Normally, we will meet for an hour a week at a regular time convenient to us both. At the first session, I will explain about confidentiality and the way I work. Also, I will ask you questions about your life and about your goals for therapy. During this session, I will assess whether integrative psychotherapy is likely to help you, and we will decide whether we feel that we can work together successfully. If I believe that someone else provides a service more suitable to your needs, then I will refer you to them. Otherwise, we will make an informal contract to work together for a number of sessions.

After the initial session, you will set the agenda and talk about issues which are a current priority for you. I will ask questions and give you insights from theory which relate to your experience. Sometimes, I will suggest an exercise which may help to illuminate the unconscious processes at work. Together, we will discover the reasons for your difficulties and explore the potential for change.

As you experiment with new ways of being, you will share that experience with me and I will guide and support you through your transformation. At our final session, we will bring the process to an end, review the work we have done together and launch your new way of being in the world.

Sometimes, six sessions may be all that is needed to talk through a specific issue and achieve your therapeutic goal. It is more common for me to be seeing a client for three months or more. The more deep-seated your issues, the longer we will need. In longer term work, we review progress regularly.
